I made a bet. I lost. But it still paid off. leadfrombehind...
LEAD FROM BEHIND is on a mission to make colon cancer famous.
We're raising awareness that #ColonCancer is The Preventable Cancer.
► Colon cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in America. 1 in 24 Americans gets colon cancer. It doesn’t need to be - because it’s preventable.
► The best way to prevent colon cancer is by getting a colonoscopy when you turn 45. The guidelines changed in 2021 lowering the age from 50 to 45.
► People don’t want to talk about colonoscopies, let alone get one. We’re using humor and heart to change that.
► Colon cancer is rising in young people - predicted to be the top cancer killer for people under 50 by 2030.
LEAD FROM BEHIND is founded by Brooks Bell, powered by @colorectalcanceralliance, and created in partnership with Maximum Effort & Chrysi Philalithes.

I had my first routine colonoscopy earlier this year. They found stage two Cancer. I had an operation a couple of weeks later, and spent the summer recovering. I am now Cancer free. If I had not decided to have this simple procedure, the Cancer would have killed me before I could have seen my daughters grow up. And they would have lost their father. This procedure saves lives.

I had one. The cleanse routine had me throwing up. My blood pressure is usually low, so they weren’t going to do the procedure when they found it was 98/50. I told them come back and take it again in a minute. I got it up to 128/60-anger. I woke up during the procedure to a terrible pain in my left side. I yelled and they put me under again. United Healthcare had approved the procedure, and then wouldn’t pay for it. So, I haven’t had another. when I had my first colonoscopy many years ago I was wheeled into the operating room and the surgeon and the nurse were preparing their equipment, when I saw the length of the scope laying on the table in front of the surgeon I said "hang on a sec doc, let me stick my gum on the end of that thing and when you see me chewing it again, stop". When I was 32 years old, I had very slight blood in my stool, just once. My doctor immediately got me to do 3 seperate stool samples. The first 2 were clear, but the 3rd showed occult blood. I had a colonoscopy a few weeks later and a precancerous polyp was removed. My doctor literally saved my life. She easily could have said I'm too young or that I didn't fit in some kind of "box" that would warrant further investigation. I'm from Australia and all I know, is that an at home stool sample kit is sent to you when you turn 50. I think this is fantastic advertising for such an important issue. Well done Ryan and Rob.

I woke up with my wife in the recovery room and after talking to her for a few seconds, found out that I had been awake for several minutes and had even talked to the dr. about the results. I do not remember any of that part. Thankfully, everything checked out fine. The only part of the whole process that was uncomfortable was the prep.

@@guruofendtimes819 You should always be aware of risks and consider what's best for you... however, only 1.6% of colonoscopies result in complications, and about 0.5% of complications are fatal which is approximately 0.00008%. ~4% of people will develop colon cancer in their life. The overall survival rate (including with early detection) is about 65%, which increases to 90% for those whose cancer is detected early. You do you, but I think the numbers speak for themselves, especially with a history of Colon cancer in my family. Ryan, thank you for putting out this message. I was 43, so too young to be screened, but I started feeling unwell and stopped having bowel movements. Six weeks later I was having emergency surgery as a tumor had completely blocked my bowel. I was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. Thankfully I had no metastases, but the lining inside my abdomen tested positive. Had a great surgeon...he left me with a double-barrel colostomy, but he intentionally did it in a way so that it could be reversed later. I went through chemo and a long recovery, but survived long enough to get that colostomy reversed. I'm 55 now and considered cured, but no one else I went through chemo with survived. I have my criticisms of western medicine, but this is a fairly low risk procedure that with early detection can save your life.

Before I did mine, I searched KZbin and found many videos by others on how they got through doing their prep and believe me, those videos helped loads. From a coders knowledge: a screening will turn into diagnostic if they find something. There are separate charges for diagnostic, biopsy, removal, and control of bleeding. So it is extremely common to have multiple colonoscopy codes charged to you during one procedure.

That shouldn’t stop anyone from doing the screening though! Better to find something early if you can. Would be nice if insurers covered it if it starts as screening and they find something though, instead of making it diagnostic and charging for it. I mean really, does that seem fair? I’ll bet some people put it off because they are afraid that there will be a polyp and then they will have to pay for the procedure.

I casually went out for lunch afterwards, not anticipating any alarming news. However, that afternoon, I was met with the grave expression of my doctor, who informed me of a small tumor in my rectum. This quickly led to a series of additional scans and consultations. I am currently in the recovery phase following a 7 hour surgery. Had I waited for symptoms, I wouldn’t see my kids grow up. Now I have 90%+ chance of beating this and continuing a normal life.

@@pepsiwepsi1952 Hi, hope you don't mind me popping into this convo to give you my symptoms. No one in my huge amount of blood relatives, alive and passed, had colorectal cancer. I was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer last year at the age of 42. I started having noticeable small amounts of blood in my stool and or on toilet paper in 2017. It was every 3 to 4 months. Took the at home blood in stool test. It came back negative. I also started having diahrea, change in bowel habits. Then towards the end of 2020 I became anemic. Noticed blood about once a month and bowel movements were 4 to 6 times a day. In 2021 I couldn't leave the house because I needed to be near a toilet. Anemia was very bad. Also had gassy rumbling in rectum area, if that makes sense. Especially when waking up in morning. Also, as soon as I woke up in the morning I had to go. Finally had a colonoscopy in August 2021 and surgery in September 2021. Couple weeks before surgery I started having the ribbon like stools. If you're asking because you're having symptoms, don't wait like I did. I was very lucky that it was only stage 2 after having symptoms for so long. Colonoscopy, and switching doctors to take me and my symptoms seriously, saved my life. Talk to your doctor if you're having any symptoms or concerns.

The doctors removed a 45mm polyp (no that is not a typo..) from my colon. The pathology showed that this was one huge ball of cancer... but the bad stuff didn't go down the stem to the bowel wall and the margins were clean, meaning once he removed the polyp, I was cancer free.. The worst part of the whole this is the prep, but the procedure is easy.. I can not stress enough if you are of age or have colorectal cancer in your family history, consult a physician and schedule it NOW!!!! #LeadFromBehind
